BANGKOK — A suspected Russian hacker has been arrested in Phuket, Thailand. This individual, wanted by the FBI for cyberattacks on U.S. and European government agencies, was detained earlier this month at a hotel.
The 35-year-old suspect, identified by Russian media as Denis Obrezko, arrived in Thailand on October 30. His family has confirmed the November 6 arrest and is planning to contest his extradition to the U.S.
The U.S. Department of Justice declined to comment on his possible extradition. Similarly, officials from the U.S. State Department and the American embassy in Thailand have remained silent on the matter. Russian authorities have expressed interest as well. The consul general in Phuket noted that they were informed about the hacker’s arrest related to information technology crimes.
Russian diplomats visited Obrezko in prison and are working to arrange family visits. According to Thailand’s Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, it was a tip from the FBI that led to his arrest in Phuket on an international warrant.
During the operation, police seized laptops, mobile phones, and digital wallets from his hotel room. FBI agents were present during the arrest, indicating a collaborative effort to tackle cybercrime.
Interestingly, another Russian hacker, Aleksey Lukashev, reportedly faced arrest in the same area, although Thai police confirmed only one arrest took place.
As the world becomes increasingly connected, cyber threats continue to rise. A recent report by Cybersecurity Ventures predicts that global cybercrime costs will reach $10.5 trillion by 2025, highlighting the need for international cooperation in cyber investigations.
The extradition process for Obrezko is underway, but the timeline remains uncertain. Such cases reflect a growing trend where nations collaborate to combat digital crime, showing that cybersecurity is now a top priority globally.
