James Dennehy, the head of the FBI’s New York field office, has retired after being ordered to submit his resignation. In a message to his colleagues, he revealed that he was instructed to retire without being given a specific reason. This shakeup comes shortly after new FBI Director Kash Patel took over and as Dan Bongino, known for his conservative views and support for former President Trump, was appointed as deputy director.
The FBI is currently under strain due to a controversial request from the Justice Department. They asked the FBI to provide the names of agents who worked on investigations related to the January 6 Capitol riot. Many in the bureau viewed this as a threat that could lead to mass firings. Dennehy, a former Marine, was among those who opposed this directive, expressing his willingness to resist the pressure.
In his farewell message, Dennehy emphasized his dedication to the FBI, stating, “I will never stop defending this joint. I’ll just do it willingly and proudly from outside the wire.” He also listed what he would miss about the FBI, including its pride in independence and commitment to integrity.
The FBI has not commented on Dennehy’s retirement. Meanwhile, Attorney General Pam Bondi has expressed concerns about the New York office’s handling of documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, requesting that the agency deliver full disclosure. This demand has further fueled tensions within the bureau.
Dennehy had a long career with the FBI, starting as a special agent in 2002, focusing on counterintelligence in New York. He later held key positions, including a section chief role at FBI headquarters and leadership in both the New York and Newark field offices.
