FBI Raids Albany Park Home of Elias Rodriguez: Suspect in Double Homicide of Israeli Embassy Staffers

John Wayne Fry didn’t know his neighbor, Elias Rodriguez, very well. Now, he regrets not reaching out. Fry wishes they could have talked about the ongoing war in Gaza.

Rodriguez was arrested for fatally shooting two Israeli Embassy staff in Washington, D.C. Witnesses say he shouted “Free Palestine” during his arrest. The FBI later searched his apartment, where a sign reading “Justice for Wadea” was visible. This sign references a tragic hate crime that occurred in 2023, when a 6-year-old Palestinian American was killed.

Fry, 71, shared with reporters that he felt he could have influenced Rodriguez, saying, “I wish I had the opportunity to talk with him because if I had, I would have talked him out of [the shooting].”

The victims, Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim, were shot as they left an event at the Capital Jewish Museum. Surveillance footage reportedly captured Rodriguez yelling “Free, free Palestine” during the incident.

Fry described Rodriguez as “quiet and friendly” but mentioned they never discussed sensitive topics like Palestine or Israel. He also noted that musings about these issues might have revealed the sensitivities surrounding them, especially after witnessing the sign in Rodriguez’s window.

### Who is Elias Rodriguez?

Rodriguez had a background in logistics and information. He was recently employed by the Chicago-based American Osteopathic Information Association as a profiles administrative specialist. The organization expressed shock at the news of his arrest.

Before that role, he worked with The History Makers, a nonprofit dedicated to documenting African American history. His biography there mentioned interests in reading, writing fiction, and exploring music and arts.

Despite his past associations, such as briefly being involved with the Party for Socialism and Liberation, the organization distanced itself from his actions, declaring he had not been affiliated since 2017.

### Community Reactions

Neighbors were taken aback by the FBI’s presence at Rodriguez’s apartment. Patrick Castillo, a local resident, noted seeing heavily armed police on the scene and described the neighborhood as typically calm. This incident shocked many who never suspected something so serious could happen in their community.

This case highlights the complexity surrounding personal histories, political affiliations, and how individuals can become involved in violent acts in times of heightened conflict. Recent data suggests that such actions often stem from deep-seated frustrations exacerbated by political situations, underscoring how real-world events can significantly impact personal choices.

Given the current global landscape, discussions around these issues are more important than ever. Understanding how such tragedies unfold can help communities be more aware and hopefully prevent future violence.
