The recent merger between Paramount Global and Skydance Media was officially approved by the Trump administration, wrapping up months of speculation and review. This $8 billion deal cleared the way for Skydance to take control of Paramount soon.

Earlier this month, Paramount also settled a contentious lawsuit against CBS News by agreeing to pay $16 million toward Trump’s presidential library. Both Paramount and the FCC maintained that this payment was not linked to the merger, although some Democratic senators expressed skepticism.

The merger comes at a time when Paramount’s programming has been under scrutiny. For instance, CBS recently announced the cancellation of “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” attributing the decision to financial challenges rather than the merger’s implications. This prompted Colbert to poke fun at CBS’s reasoning during his show.

Similarly, Jon Stewart from “The Daily Show” criticized the merger’s atmosphere, suggesting it was a direct result of Trump’s pressure tactics.

Experts in media and politics have noted that such mergers often reflect larger trends in the industry and can lead to shifts in how news is reported. A Pew Research study highlighted that 63% of Americans feel news organizations are biased. Hence, the commitments made by Skydance could have significant implications for how CBS reshapes its image and content.
