India is making impressive strides in green energy and electric vehicles (EVs). As of February this year, there are 5.675 million registered EVs in the country. This represents a significant shift toward cleaner transportation.
In the fiscal year 2025, electric two-wheeler sales reached 1.149 million units, up 21% from the previous year. This upward trend showcases the increasing demand for sustainable mobility as the government aims for 30% EV adoption by 2030, in line with the global EV30@30 initiative.
Various government programs are driving this change. The Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Hybrid and Electric Vehicles II (FAME II) initiative, launched in April 2019, has a budget of ₹11,500 crores. It has supported a wide range of EVs, including two-wheelers, three-wheelers, cars, and electric buses.
Recently, the Ministry of Heavy Industries allocated ₹800 crores to support major oil companies in installing over 7,400 public charging stations across India. An additional ₹73.5 crores was approved in March 2024 to upgrade around 980 existing stations. By June 2025, more than 8,800 charging stations will be operational, marking a critical step toward enhancing the nation’s EV infrastructure.
Another key initiative is the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which aims to position India as a global leader in advanced automotive technology. Launched in September 2021, it has drawn a total investment of ₹29,576 crores and created nearly 45,000 jobs. This scheme focuses on boosting domestic manufacturing and promoting innovation in the automotive sector.
The PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM-E DRIVE), launched in September 2024 with a budget of ₹10,900 crores, addresses the pressing issue of urban air pollution by accelerating electric mobility.
Additionally, the PM eBus Sewa aims to transform public transport. With a budget of ₹20,000 crores, the plan involves rolling out 10,000 electric buses under a Public-Private Partnership model. This initiative focuses on making urban transportation cleaner and more efficient.
A recent study reveals that 67% of urban residents support the shift to electric public transportation due to its environmental benefits. Social media platforms are buzzing with discussions about the government’s efforts, with hashtags like #GoElectric trending, reflecting a growing public interest in sustainable practices.
