Fede Alvarez Steps Down: What This Means for the Future of ‘Alien: Romulus’ Sequel

Last year, Fede Alvarez breathed new life into the Alien series with Alien: Romulus. The film was a hit, raking in $350 million worldwide. Thanks to this success, 20th Century Studios quickly started working on a sequel, with Alvarez initially set to direct.

However, in a recent interview, Alvarez announced he won’t be directing the sequel. Instead, he is looking for a new director to take the helm for the follow-up featuring Cailee Spaeny.

“We just finished the script for the sequel to Romulus, but I’m going to pass the torch on this one as director,” he shared with TooFab at Universal Studios Halloween Horror Nights. “I’m producing it together with Ridley Scott, and we’re right now trying to find a new filmmaker.”

Alvarez co-wrote the sequel screenplay with Rodo Sayagues. After Romulus was released, he had noted that the team had exciting ideas for the storyline, especially since the film ended with the two main characters heading to Yvaga.

“My philosophy is that you should never rush a sequel,” he explained. “You need some distance. This builds anticipation for the audience.” He cited the seven-year gap between Alien and Aliens as a perfect example of how time can help a sequel feel fresh.

The Alien franchise, along with its counterpart Predator, has seen a resurgence in popularity. Recent projects like Romulus and the FX series Alien: Earth, plus films like Prey, have sparked renewed interest. Another Predator movie, Predator: Badlands, is set to release on November 7 and features Elle Fanning, further indicating the franchise’s revitalization.

As the search for a new director unfolds, fans and critics alike are eager to see what direction the franchise will take next. The blend of horror, suspense, and science fiction continues to captivate audiences, proving that Alien still has a strong place in movie history.
