A federal judge in Manhattan has ruled that Elon Musk’s cost-cutting team, called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), cannot access sensitive payment and data systems of the U.S. Treasury. This decision comes amid an ongoing lawsuit claiming that this access is unlawful.
Judge Jeannette A. Vargas issued an order on Friday to continue a temporary restraining order that blocks DOGE members from accessing critical systems that hold sensitive information, including payment records that contain personal data like Social Security numbers and bank account details.
The lawsuit was filed by 19 state attorneys general, led by Letitia James of New York. They are challenging a policy enacted during the Trump administration that allowed political appointees and “special government employees” associated with Musk to access these vital systems.
In her remarks, Attorney General James stated that Musk and his team are attempting to dismantle essential programs and services that support healthcare, safety, and education in communities. She emphasized the need for legal action to protect sensitive information from being misused.
This case, which is one of many legal challenges against the current administration’s expansive policies, raises important questions about how the courts will uphold the law when it conflicts with executive branch initiatives.
