COVERT, MI – The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has determined that bringing uranium fuel back to the reactor vessel at the Palisades Power Plant and restarting its energy generation would not significantly harm the environment.

This week, NRC officials shared an important environmental report regarding Holtec International’s proposal to revitalize the aging nuclear facility, which has been inactive since May 2022. Holtec purchased the Palisades Power Plant with plans to repower it. Their draft environmental assessment reviews various concerns about the environment and public health. The report is now available for community feedback, with comments accepted until March 3.
Discussions like these are important as they allow community members to express their views and help ensure that regulations protect everyone’s health and safety. With the plant being a key part of the local economy and energy supply, the stakes are high for both the environment and the community’s future.
