Feds Uncover Alleged Schemes by Former Advisors to Newsom and Becerra: Luxury Jets and High-End Goods in the Spotlight

Gov. Gavin Newsom’s former chief of staff, Dana Williamson, was arrested on federal charges this week. She allegedly misappropriated $225,000 from the dormant campaign account of 2026 gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra. In addition, she is accused of writing off lavish expenses, such as luxury handbags and extravagant trips, as business costs on her tax returns.

The 23-count indictment highlights her connection with Becerra’s former chief deputy, Sean McCluskie, and lobbyist Greg Campbell. The trio supposedly billed Becerra’s campaign for fake consulting services, starting in early 2022 when Becerra was serving as Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Biden.

During her court appearance, Williamson, 53, looked solemn and emotional as she pleaded not guilty. She was released on a $500,000 bond but must follow certain conditions, including drug testing and surrendering her passport. The judge has given her until November 26 to provide collateral.

In a statement, Becerra expressed disappointment over the accusations against someone he trusted, while emphasizing his cooperation with federal authorities. McCluskie is reportedly cooperating with the investigation after agreeing to plead guilty to a charge of conspiracy.

Williamson’s financial dealings included extravagant purchases. Reportedly, she claimed a $15,353 Chanel purse and a lavish trip to Mexico that included an $11,000 yacht rental—all charged to taxpayers. Her actions occurred during the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), enacted to support businesses during the COVID pandemic.

This scandal could shake up the political landscape for the 2026 California governor race, which will see candidates like Becerra and other prominent Democrats enter the fray. Even though Becerra isn’t directly implicated, being connected to a scandal could complicate his campaign.

Newsom, who is eyeing a presidential run in 2028, may also feel the fallout. Williamson, a key advisor, served under Newsom through challenging times, including a budget crisis and various policy hurdles. Her legacy in Sacramento was significant, but now her alleged actions might tarnish the reputation of those around her.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has stated that the indictment results from a thorough three-year investigation, indicating this issue has been brewing for some time.

As the political fallout unfolds, it remains to be seen how this will impact not only the upcoming elections but also the overall perception of leadership and accountability in California politics.
