Feed the Community: Join Us for a Massive Free Food Distribution at Las Palmas Park!

At Las Palmas Park in San Fernando, a community effort was in full swing as thousands of pounds of food lined the gymnasium tables, ready for distribution. Fresh milk, juice, bread, fruits, and canned goods were available for families in need.

More than a hundred eager individuals formed a line outside, armed with bags and carts. Volunteers from the Ignite The Light Of Hope Foundation worked tirelessly for over an hour, ensuring that everyone received what they needed.

“The need is enormous, especially now with food prices rising,” said Lorraine Aceves, the foundation’s president. “Summer adds to the challenge with children not in school and not eligible for free meals.”

Founded during the COVID-19 pandemic, this nonprofit has evolved. Instead of sticking to one location, they bring food to various sites in San Fernando, Pacoima, and Sylmar every Friday. They partner with organizations like MEND and the Dream Center to reach more families.

Funding is crucial for their operations. A recent $5,000 grant from the local City Council helped make this distribution possible. Aceves emphasized how vital these donations are, saying, “Every bit of funding helps us support our community better and alleviates some financial pressure.”

Recently, the foundation faced an unexpected challenge. After federal immigration raids in the area, many people began to fear leaving their homes. In response, they started a pilot program, delivering bags of food directly to families in need on the day of distribution. “We don’t knock on doors or ask questions. We respect their privacy,” Aceves explained.

One compelling story highlighted this need. A young girl reached out for help when her father couldn’t work due to fear, leaving their family struggling to meet basic needs. “I knew there was a need, and we acted quickly,” Aceves said.

Upcoming food distributions are planned, including one at Las Palmas Park this Friday at 11:30 a.m. Future events will also be held at the Vaughn Family & Community Center and El Cariso Park.
