The Federal Government is stepping up its efforts to tackle climate challenges in Nigeria. Recently, they emphasized the importance of the Agro-Climate Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project. This initiative is a key part of Nigeria’s strategy to combat issues like flooding, land degradation, and water scarcity.
In a recent statement, Joseph Utsev, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, highlighted the project during a meeting in Kaduna. He stressed that this project is vital for managing water resources and improving communities’ resilience to climate change.
Utsev, who co-chairs the ACReSAL Steering Committee, pointed out that the mid-term review of the project is an opportune time to evaluate its progress. This meeting is crucial for stakeholders to discuss what’s working, where improvements are needed, and how to confront challenges.
“Collaboration across sectors is essential for the success of ACReSAL,” Utsev noted. Key areas of focus include better water management, access to climate data, and ensuring the sustainability of the project’s efforts.
Balarabe Lawal, the Minister of Environment, also spoke about the impact of ACReSAL. He emphasized the importance of long-term policies to support the project’s goals. “States need laws to ensure the benefits of ACReSAL last beyond its initial funding,” he said.
The ACReSAL project, backed by the World Bank, aims to address environmental challenges in Nigeria, particularly in semi-arid regions. These areas face severe desertification and unpredictable rainfall, which threatens agriculture and livelihoods.
Nigeria has recently faced severe climate shocks. For instance, the country dealt with intense flooding last year, which affected farming and displaced many people. A recent survey showed that 66% of Nigerians believe that climate change poses a significant threat to their way of life, reflecting widespread concern about ongoing environmental issues.
