A $1.8 million grant is now available to help Fiji strengthen its efforts to fight climate change. This funding is crucial for the implementation of the Strategic Implementation Roadmap for Fiji’s Climate Change Act, which is managed by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change.
Minister Mosese Bulitavu expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from the European Union and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI). He noted that this partnership plays a vital role in building the nation’s resilience to climate impacts and promoting the shift to renewable energy sources.
“This grant will enhance the broader implementation of the EU’s budget support package,” Bulitavu said. This support aligns with the Climate Change Act’s objectives and gives Fiji the confidence to initiate significant reforms.
Notably, 13 out of the 17 parts of the Climate Change Act will soon take effect, following the recent approval of the commencement notice. This marks a significant step forward in Fiji’s climate policy, showcasing the country’s commitment to a sustainable future.
Recent studies show that countries like Fiji are increasingly recognizing how climate change affects not only the environment but their economies and communities as well. For instance, according to a 2023 World Bank report, small island nations face some of the highest risks associated with rising sea levels, which makes these initiatives even more vital.
