Fiji is at the forefront of climate change challenges, yet it contributes only a tiny fraction—0.004%—of global greenhouse gas emissions. This was emphasized by Senivasa Waqairamasi, the director of Fiji’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, during a recent climate session.
Waqairamasi pointed out that Fiji faces serious threats from climate change, including rising sea levels, flooding, and risks to food and water. Recent data from the National Inventory Report shows that greenhouse gas emissions in Fiji are on the rise. The energy sector leads, contributing over 52% of emissions, with forestry, agriculture, waste, and industrial processes following.
“The impacts of climate change are no longer in the future; they are happening now,” Waqairamasi stated. In response, the Fijian government has begun relocating vulnerable communities affected by flooding. Financial support of about $100,000 per community is provided through climate funding partnerships.
Waqairamasi stressed the need for urgent action, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and moving towards renewable energy. This year, Fiji will host a pre-COP 31 meeting with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, underscoring its role as a global leader in climate action.
The Climate Change Act of 2021 and Fiji’s Nationally Determined Contributions aim to set emission reduction targets and detail specific actions across various sectors. However, Waqairamasi believes that to truly address these challenges, Fiji needs stronger access to climate finance and technology.
A united approach is essential, involving government, civil society, and local communities, to secure a sustainable future for Fiji. As global climate discussions continue, Fiji’s experiences could inspire other nations facing similar challenges.
