FLORENCE, Ala. (October 7, 2025) – The University of North Alabama (UNA) football team is bringing back memories of a golden era during their game on Saturday against Central Arkansas. They’re commemorating the 2000s, a time when they had thrilling matchups and significant victories. This game, starting at 3 p.m. at Braly Stadium, promises to be nostalgic for fans and alumni.
The tradition-rich Braly Stadium has been home to UNA football since 1949. It has witnessed many memorable moments, especially during the mid-2000s when the Lions and Bears faced off repeatedly. This season, as part of the “Final Season at Braly,” UNA will sport different helmet decals reflecting key eras in their history. Players from 2000 to 2010 will be honored in a special pre-game event.
The Lions will wear the “Scratch Marks” logo, seen from 2002 to 2004. This period was marked by impressive achievements, with a record of 93 wins and 40 losses. They secured Gulf South Conference championships in 2003, 2006, and 2009 and made seven NCAA Division II playoff appearances, winning all first-round games.
Notably, seven players from this era are already in the UNA Athletic Hall of Fame. These include stars like Harlon Hill-winning quarterback Will Hall and defensive standout Evan Oglesby. Their accomplishments reflect how this group set a high bar for future players.
Head coach Mark Hudspeth, who led the team from 2002 to 2008, built a legacy during his tenure. Under his guidance, the Lions achieved a remarkable 44-8 record and made five playoff appearances. His leadership in 2005 was particularly notable, as the team reached the national semifinals, facing a heartbreaking loss to Central Arkansas following a thrilling overtime victory against them earlier that season.
The success streak continued under Terry Bowden from 2009 to 2011, maintaining a solid win rate and securing another GSC title. It’s clear that this era produced not only winning seasons but also a strong sense of community among players and fans.
This weekend will also serve as a reminder of how far the program has come and the legacy that continues to inspire new generations of players. As fans gather at Braly Stadium, they’ll not only watch a game but also celebrate a rich history that has shaped UNA football.
