The bodies of the 95-year-old actor and his 65-year-old wife were found on February 26. They were located in different rooms of their home, alongside one of their dogs named Zinna.

Gene’s daughter, Elizabeth Jean Hackman, suggested that carbon monoxide poisoning might be the cause of their deaths. However, initial tests by the fire department found no signs of a leak or poisoning. Santa Fe Fire Chief Brian Moya stated that the couple likely passed away around the same time, as the conditions of their bodies suggested similar timelines.

Gene’s pacemaker last recorded activity on February 17, nine days before they were discovered. New Mexico Gas Company inspected their home and found no significant gas leak. They did detect a very minor leak near a stove burner, but the amount of gas was not considered lethal.

Moreover, there were several code violations noted around the house, although none were linked to gas or carbon monoxide. The sheriff’s office indicated that natural gas is not believed to be involved in their deaths.

During the search, authorities found Gene in a mudroom and Betsy in a bathroom near a space heater. There were also prescription medications scattered on the counter, but no signs of trauma or gunshot wounds were found on either of them.

This tragic incident has left many in shock, but while the exact cause of their deaths remains unclear, officials continue to investigate. Gene Hackman was admired not only for his successful acting career but also for his warmth and spirit in his personal life with Betsy.
