First Graduate from Brainerd: Innovative Program Tackling Healthcare Workforce Shortages

Essentia Health is making strides to tackle health care workforce shortages. Recently, Alexis (Lexi) Pardun, a Brainerd native, became the first graduate of a new apprenticeship program at Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center. She completed the 12-month, paid program that combined hands-on training and mentorship from experienced surgical technologists. Essentia covered all educational costs, allowing her to pursue her passion without the burden of student debt.

Lexi began her career in a veterinarian clinic before transitioning to Essentia as a sterile processing technician. Despite being encouraged to become a surgical technician, she worried about accumulating student loans. Thanks to Essentia, she could focus on her studies and even bought a house during her training. “I love surgery and helping people. I just want to make a difference,” she remarked, grateful for the support she received throughout the program.

Melissa McKay, regional director of nursing at Essentia, celebrated Lexi’s achievement, noting that it marked a significant milestone as the first graduation from this program in Essentia’s East Market. “This is a really big deal,” she stated, highlighting the hard work of everyone involved.

The program aims to address a critical shortage of surgical technologists, particularly in rural areas. Ray Kordack, who leads the initiative, emphasized that it’s not just about training people—it’s about meeting an urgent need in the health care sector. According to a report by the National Institute for Health Care Management, the shortage of health care workers is a growing concern, affecting access to care across the nation.

Statistics from the Association of American Medical Colleges project a shortage of over 85,000 physicians by 2036. Furthermore, a recent analysis by KFF found that nearly 3 million Americans live in areas lacking adequate health care and internet access, creating significant barriers to receiving care.

Surgical technologists play crucial roles in operating rooms, helping surgeons and nurses to maintain a sterile environment and ensuring surgeries proceed smoothly. As health care demands rise, the significance of training dedicated professionals cannot be overstated.

In essence, programs like the one Lexi completed are essential to not only filling these gaps in health care but also ensuring high-quality services for communities.
