Leonz Eder recently visited Lviv to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the International Scientific Conference “Young Sports Science of Ukraine” and the 80th anniversary of Lviv State University of Physical Culture. The event brought together the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and the university, highlighting progress in university sports in Ukraine.
Eder, along with FISU General Administration Manager Natalya Kosterna, emphasized the need to remember the past while planning for the future. They focused on FISU’s programs and upcoming events, aiming to boost participation and interest.
During the visit, Eder met with prominent figures in Ukrainian sports, including Deputy Ministers Andrii Vitrenko and Vitalii Lavrov, as well as Maksym Kozytskyy, Head of the Lviv Regional State Administration. They discussed enhancing university sports and community health.
Yaroslav Svyshch, the rector of the university, mentioned the importance of a holistic approach to education. This focus nurtures well-rounded students, preparing them for various challenges. Eder praised the university’s commitment and proposed they join FISU’s Healthy Campus Programme. This initiative aims to improve students’ physical and mental well-being.
In a show of appreciation, Lviv State University awarded Eder an honorary doctorate for his dedication to promoting university sports globally.
Maksym Kozytskyy expressed hopes for hosting international student sports events in Lviv. Eder toured the university’s multisport facilities, previously visited by IAAF President Sebastian Coe. This facility reflects Lviv’s potential as a hub for future sports events.
In discussions with the SSUU President and Secretary General, they talked about participating in FISU events, including the upcoming Changchun 2027 Winter Universiade.
Looking at the bigger picture, university sports have seen increased interest globally. According to a recent survey by the International Association of Universities, 64% of students value physical activity as essential for their education. With more universities recognizing the importance of sports, Lviv’s initiatives might set a precedent for other regions.
As Ukraine continues to invest in sports and education, there’s a bright path ahead for the development of future athletes and a more active society.
