Flight Frenzy: Man Charged for Allegedly Stabbing Two Teens with Fork on Chicago to Germany Trip, DOJ Reports

A recent incident on a Lufthansa flight from Chicago to Germany has raised concerns about in-flight safety. A 28-year-old man, Praneeth Kumar Usiripalli, has been charged with stabbing two teenage boys with a metal fork during the flight.

According to the Department of Justice, the alarming events unfolded after the meal service. A 17-year-old boy, who was lightly sleeping in the middle seat, woke up to find Usiripalli standing over him. He was allegedly stabbed in the shoulder. Usiripalli then targeted another 17-year-old boy, stabbing him in the back of the head.

Attempts by the flight crew to control Usiripalli escalated his erratic behavior. He reportedly formed a gun with his fingers, pretended to pull a trigger, and even slapped a female passenger and a crew member. This prompted the flight to divert to Boston Logan International Airport, where Usiripalli was taken into custody.

Interestingly, sources reveal that incidents of passenger misconduct on flights have increased. A recent survey by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported a rise in unruly behavior, peaking at over 5,000 reports in just one year. Experts believe that factors such as heightened anxiety from travel disruptions and increasing alcohol consumption during flights contribute to this trend.

Usiripalli, who initially entered the United States on a student visa, is now facing serious charges, including assault with a dangerous weapon. If found guilty, he could face up to ten years in prison.

Lufthansa has addressed the situation, emphasizing their commitment to passenger safety. They confirmed that all aboard the affected flight were provided accommodations as the situation was handled.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining safety in the skies. As air travel continues to regain popularity, ensuring that passengers remain calm and collected is essential.
