Flights Canceled as Burbank Airport’s Air Traffic Control Tower Faces Shutdown: What Travelers Need to Know

Hollywood Burbank Airport faced significant delays on Monday due to an unmanned air traffic control tower. This issue arose from a staffing shortage linked to the ongoing government shutdown. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the tower has been without staff since 4:15 PM and will remain so until 10 PM. Spokesperson Kristen Alsop confirmed that the lack of controllers was causing widespread delays.

As of late afternoon, flights were delayed by an average of two and a half hours. The longest reported delay reached nearly four hours. There were also several cancellations, further inconveniencing travelers.

With the tower unmanned, air traffic in the area is being managed by Southern California TRACON, which utilizes radar technology for safe operations across the airspace, encompassing multiple airports in the region.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy hinted at a rise in controllers calling in sick during the shutdown, emphasizing the strain on staffing. Governor Gavin Newsom expressed frustration, pointing the finger at President Trump for the situation.

The National Air Traffic Controllers Association (NATCA), the union representing these critical workers, highlighted the vulnerability of the aviation system. They reported that nearly 11,000 air traffic controllers are currently working without pay, often enduring long shifts. The union stressed the urgent need for increased hiring and training of new controllers to prevent such disruptions.
