Florida A&M University Celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
On January 16, Florida A&M University (FAMU) held its 2026 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Convocation at Lee Hall Auditorium. The event brought together students, faculty, alumni, and community members to honor Dr. King’s legacy.
The convocation wasn’t just a ceremony; it was a call to action. Kennedy Williams, the Student Government Association vice president, emphasized the importance of students behaving as responsible ambassadors of Dr. King’s vision. “We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. It’s our duty to uphold their legacy,” she said.
Zayla Bryant, the SGA President, marked her final occasion on stage before graduation, receiving the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Student Leadership Award. Her leadership during her time at FAMU has inspired many.
President Marva B. Johnson addressed the audience with enthusiasm, urging them to keep Dr. King’s dream alive. “His vision endures in HBCUs like FAMU. It’s up to each of us to contribute to a beloved community,” she stated, reinforcing that education and integrity are essential for progress.
Elder Darrick McGhee Sr., a proud FAMU alumnus and pastor, delivered the keynote speech. He spoke directly to students, particularly first-generation college students, encouraging them to see beyond their current situations. “You may feel alone in your dreams, but you are not,” he reassured them.
McGhee referenced Dr. King’s famous “I Have a Dream” speech, reminding attendees of the ongoing fight for equality. “Don’t let doubt deter you. Look for opportunities and connections. You matter,” he said.
He concluded with a powerful story about a young runner navigating fog during a race, symbolizing perseverance amid challenges. “When life gets tough, listen for voices encouraging you to keep pushing forward,” he advised.
The event wrapped up with uplifting performances by the FAMU University Gospel Choir, bringing the community together in celebration. The convocation served not just as a tribute but as a community pledge to continue striving for justice and equality.
By reflecting on the past while encouraging future leaders, FAMU honors Dr. King’s legacy, reminding everyone that the journey for justice is ongoing.
