Florida Blue CEO Announces Retirement: What This Means for the Future of the Fast-Growing Health Insurer

Pat Geraghty, the long-serving CEO of GuideWell and Florida Blue, is stepping down at the end of 2025. At 65, he has led the company since 2011, transforming it from a regional health insurer into a national leader with over $32 billion in annual revenue.

Under his guidance, Florida Blue expanded its reach, serving over 38 million people across the U.S., Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The company now employs more than 18,000 staff. Geraghty’s commitment helped Florida Blue stay strong in the face of challenges, especially during the rollout of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). While many insurers pulled back from individual insurance markets, Florida Blue remained dedicated, offering products in all 67 counties of Florida.

Geraghty’s impact on the company goes beyond numbers. He emphasized a consumer-focused approach, striving to make health solutions accessible while maintaining quality care. He expressed pride in reshaping the organization with a mission centered on improving health in communities.

"With an engaged board and a caring team, we’ve aimed to meet our members where they are," Geraghty stated. He looks forward to passing the leadership baton and wishes the organization continued success.

The company’s board has begun searching for Geraghty’s successor, working with Russell Reynolds Associates to ensure a smooth transition in leadership.

Geraghty’s retirement comes at a time when the health insurance landscape is rapidly changing. According to a recent report by the Kaiser Family Foundation, 38% of Americans say they are likely to face challenges in affording health care in the next year, underscoring the need for stable leadership in the industry.

Geraghty leaves behind a legacy of resilience and innovation in health insurance. His vision helped navigate complex market dynamics and shaped Florida Blue into a trusted provider, setting a high standard for health-focused services.
