A Florida doctor, Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky, is facing serious charges after a tragic surgical mistake that led to the death of a 70-year-old man from Alabama. He has been indicted for second-degree manslaughter in connection with this case.
On August 21, 2024, during what was meant to be a laparoscopic splenectomy, Shaknovsky accidentally removed the victim’s liver instead of his spleen. This error caused major blood loss, resulting in the patient’s death on the operating table. After the incident, the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners took swift action, temporarily suspending Shaknovsky’s medical license, which was later revoked.
Dr. Shaknovsky’s troubles didn’t end there. His licenses in Florida and New York were also suspended. Documents suggest that the doctor pressured the patient into surgery after diagnosing him with abdominal pain and an enlarged spleen. The patient wished to return home but was convinced to proceed.
