A Florida death row inmate, Edward Thomas James, was executed on Thursday, making him the second man put to death that day in the U.S. and the fourth this week. He was 63 years old and faced lethal injection for the horrific murders of Elizabeth "Betty" Dick and her 8-year-old granddaughter, Toni Neuner.
James’s execution followed a string of recent executions across the country. Just hours before, Wendell Grissom was executed in Oklahoma. Earlier in the week, Jessie Hoffman was put to death in Louisiana, and Aaron Gunches faced execution in Arizona. James became the second inmate to be executed in Florida this year and the tenth nationally.
The prosecution in James’s original trial described the brutal nature of his crimes. “This defendant deserves no more mercy than he showed his two victims,” said trial prosecutor Tom Hastings back in 1995. Notably, James had previously expressed his acceptance of the death penalty but recently, his attorneys attempted to halt his execution, citing significant mental decline and memory loss.
The Crimes
On September 20, 1993, James, who had been renting a room in Betty Dick’s home, committed the violent acts while under the influence. He attacked young Toni while she slept, leading to her tragic death. Following this, he brutally assaulted and killed Betty before fleeing the scene, igniting a nationwide manhunt. He was captured after being recognized on "America’s Most Wanted."
In court, he stated, “I don’t want to die but I do believe it’s the proper penalty for what I committed.” His troubling history included dropping out of school and struggling with substance abuse.
Victims’ Legacy
Betty Dick was remembered as a kind grandmother who would take in others without suspicion. Her family shocked at the crimes, shared that no one would have thought James capable of such violence. Toni was described as a vibrant child, loved by her family and close to her sister, who was present during the crime but unable to intervene.
Execution Details
James was executed just after 8 p.m. ET at Florida State Prison. There was a two-hour delay before the execution, though officials did not provide an explanation. His attorneys argued that James was not fit for execution due to cognitive decline and memory impairment, suggesting that executing him under these conditions would be inhumane. However, courts consistently rejected these claims.
Future of Capital Punishment
Looking ahead, four more executions are scheduled in April across the U.S., including one in Florida. All upcoming executions will generally be by lethal injection, although one inmate has the option to choose between execution methods.
