Missouri Stuns Florida in SEC Opener
COLUMBIA, Mo. – In an exciting Southeastern Conference opener, Missouri edged out Florida, 76-74. Florida coach Todd Golden watched as Mizzou guard Anthony Robinson II took a contested shot with just seconds left. “When it left his hand, I thought it would miss,” Golden said. But it banked in—giving Mizzou a crucial five-point lead.
Florida had one last chance, but Boogie Fland’s long 3-pointer missed, capping off a frustrating night for the Gators. They struggled from behind the arc, hitting only 25.9% of their shots, a sharp contrast to their strong rebounding stats.
The Gators had been ranked first in total rebounds per game (47.5) and rebounding margin (+17.2). But they fell short against the Tigers, who held their own on the boards, tying at 37 rebounds overall. Thomas Haugh led Florida with 24 points but stressed the need to dominate rebounding, especially with their poor shooting. “If we’re going to shoot like that, we have to win the rebound battle,” he said.
Mizzou also had some standout performances. Robinson finished with 19 points and had support from forward Mark Mitchell and guard Jacob Crews, contributing 14 and 13 points, respectively. The Tigers left behind a rough past game, a 43-point loss to Illinois, showing they had regained some momentum.
Trent Pierce made a splash in his season debut, adding 10 points and helping the Tigers rally back from a deficit late in the first half. Florida started strong but struggled as the game progressed.
Missing shots hurt the Gators, who have now had nine games this season where they shot under 30% from 3-point range. Golden acknowledged that in close games, those missed shots become significant. “To win on the road, you’ve got to step up and make shots,” he explained.
As the teams move forward, Mizzou’s win serves as a reminder of how unpredictable college basketball can be and the importance of resilience in the face of past losses.
