The No. 3 Florida Gators softball team secured a thrilling 3-1 win against the No. 2 Texas Longhorns in their latest matchup. This game was held at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium and marked a significant moment for the Gators, as it was their highest-ranked home victory since 2017.

Freshman pitcher Katelynn Oxley shone brightly, claiming her first Southeastern Conference win. In five innings, she allowed only one unearned run and two hits. Her performance was crucial, especially as the team had faced losses in the earlier games of the series. Sophomore Ava Brown stepped up in relief, throwing two hitless innings and earning her second save of the season.
The standout play came from another freshman, Taylor Shumaker. She hit a two-RBI double in the third inning, pushing Florida ahead. With this performance, Shumaker has now tied for the fifth-most RBI by a Florida freshman with 48, reflecting her remarkable impact on the team.
The Gators’ record now stands at 28-4 overall and 3-3 in SEC play. Notable achievements from the game include Brown and Oxley’s efforts, which held Texas to a season-low of one run and two hits. This was a rare feat, as Texas hadn’t been limited to just two hits since May 2024.
Senior player Kendra Falby extended her impressive streak to 32 games on base and 18 games hitting successfully. This consistency showcases her significant role in the team’s lineup. Additionally, her teammate Mia Williams achieved a personal milestone with her first career sacrifice fly during this game.
Head Coach Tim Walton praised Oxley and her maturity on the mound. Walton highlighted her improvement throughout the season, noting that both she and Brown showed great promise. He emphasized that Oxley’s comfort and confidence have grown, contributing to her success.
Walton also commended Shumaker’s capability and maturity at such a young age, explaining how she has quickly adapted to the challenges of SEC softball. Her understanding of the game and her leadership qualities have been remarkable, making her a key player this season.
Reflecting on her journey, Shumaker discussed the learning process of facing elite pitchers and the importance of team support. Oxley, too, expressed how leaning on her teammates has helped her grow. Despite facing nerves, particularly as a freshman, she is committed to trusting her abilities and her team.
Looking ahead, the Gators are set to travel to Jacksonville for a pair of midweek games, with one against Jacksonville and another against UNF. This series will be another test for the Gators as they strive to maintain their momentum in a competitive season.
