Florida Set to Become the Second State to Eliminate Fluoride from Public Water Systems: What This Means for You

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida is set to become the second state to ban fluoride in public drinking water. This move has sparked concern among dentists and public health advocates who argue that fluoride is essential for cavity prevention.

Lawmakers recently approved the bill after Utah made a similar decision last month. Influenced by a campaign from U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Republican-led states are considering similar bans. Governor Ron DeSantis will review Florida’s measure next.

Fluoride is known for strengthening teeth by replenishing lost minerals, a benefit highlighted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC identifies adding low levels of fluoride to drinking water as one of the greatest public health accomplishments in history.

Brett Kessler, president of the American Dental Association, expressed worry about decisions that may adversely affect public health. He believes that eliminating fluoride could harm vulnerable populations and strain the economy.

The Florida bill requires the removal of fluoride and other additives from water sources, according to its sponsor, Republican state Rep. Kaylee Tuck. She stated that the focus is on not touching quality-related issues.

Local officials have begun acting before the state legislation. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava criticized the bill for not aligning with the consensus among health experts, stating it could have severe long-term health effects, especially for families in need.

Nationally, a 2022 CDC report revealed that around one-third of community water systems, which serve over 60% of Americans, fluoridate their water.
