Gus Malzahn is stepping away from coaching after an impressive 35-year career. Recently, he served as the offensive coordinator at Florida State, where Tim Harris will take over his role.
Malzahn began his coaching journey in 1991 and made a name for himself as the head coach of Auburn from 2013 to 2020. At 60 years old, he feels it’s time to focus on family and the next chapter of his life. “After 35 years, it’s time for me to step away from coaching,” he shared in a recent statement. During his coaching career, Malzahn achieved a record of 105 wins and 62 losses as a head coach at places like Arkansas State, Auburn, and UCF. His most notable success came in 2013 with Auburn, where he led his team to a 12-2 record and the BCS National Championship Game, though they lost to Florida State.
After a period of ups and downs at Auburn, where he made the SEC Championship Game in 2017, he left the team following a challenging final season. UCF hired him in 2021. He enjoyed two successful seasons there but faced tougher times toward the end, resulting in his resignation.
Malzahn then joined Florida State, serving as offensive coordinator for the past year. Coach Norvell appreciated Malzahn’s contributions, praising his ability to lay a solid foundation for the team. He believes that Tim Harris will effectively carry on that vision for next season.
