At Florida State University’s recent commencement ceremonies, a mix of gratitude, inspiration, and ambition filled the air. Graduates, supported by family and friends, celebrated the completion of a significant chapter in their lives.
During the afternoon ceremony, Jim Henderson, chair of the Board of Trustees and an FSU alumnus, addressed the crowd. He earned degrees in accounting and economics in 1969 while balancing work and commuting from Wakulla County. Henderson has since climbed the ranks in the insurance industry, founding AssuredPartners in 2011, which has grown into a major player in the field with over 11,000 employees across North America and Europe.
Henderson emphasized that their education at FSU is more than just a degree. He highlighted the importance of curiosity, critical thinking, and the power to shape one’s own narrative. “Knowledge allows you to be the cause and not just the effect,” he said. His message also encouraged graduates to give back, sharing their time and talents, no matter their financial situation. He concluded with a powerful reminder: “There is no expiration date on your dreams.”
In the evening ceremony, Pamela Keel, the newly named Robert O. Lawton Distinguished Professor, took the stage. Keel, a respected clinical psychologist, is renowned for her research on eating disorders and body image. Since joining FSU in 2008, she has secured over $55 million in research funding and played a pivotal role in several key initiatives, including a major program to support biomedical research.
Keel’s humor and thoughtful insights resonated deeply. She spoke about the importance of making compassionate decisions and embracing uncertainty. Her work combines various fields, making significant strides in understanding challenges related to mental health.
Graduates left feeling inspired, equipped with not just their degrees but also a sense of purpose and the motivation to make a difference in the world. Amid social media reactions, many expressed pride in sharing this achievement with their families and friends, while others highlighted how Henderson’s and Keel’s messages reinforced their determination to pursue their dreams.
As they begin this new journey, the graduates carry the legacy of their university—armed with knowledge, resilience, and the belief that they can impact the future.
