Florida State University President Richard McCullough recently joined the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame. He was honored during a ceremony in Tampa, recognizing his groundbreaking work in organic electronics.
McCullough’s achievements include developing a unique polymer called regioregular polythiophenes, which is essential for technology like solar cells and transistors. His innovation extends to creating conductive inks, revolutionizing how electronics are printed. This advancement offers features that traditional metallic inks cannot match.
Upon receiving this recognition, McCullough expressed gratitude, stating, “Founding companies based on my research showed me how science can impact society. I aim to bring that entrepreneurial spirit to my leadership at FSU.”
The Florida Inventors Hall of Fame celebrates inventors connected to the state whose contributions have improved American life while inspiring future innovators. McCullough is among those leading this charge, echoing a growing trend in academia that prioritizes innovation and real-world application.
Recent studies highlight a surge in university-led startups. A 2022 report from the Association of University Technology Managers noted that campus innovations led to nearly 1,000 new startups across the U.S., underlining the importance of academic institutions in fostering creativity and entrepreneurship.
McCullough’s past roles underscore his dedication to innovation. As a vice president for research at Carnegie Mellon University, he launched initiatives that significantly increased the number of university spin-out companies. At Harvard, he spearheaded a $100 million project to advance biomanufacturing, showing a commitment to bridging research and market needs.
Additionally, McCullough joins other distinguished faculty members in the Hall of Fame, including Robert Holton, who developed the anti-cancer drug Taxol, and the late Thomas Lipo, known for advancements in electric vehicles.
