Foo Fighters Welcomes Ilan Rubin as New Drummer, Stepping in for Josh Freese

Just months after firing Josh Freese, Foo Fighters have welcomed drummer Ilan Rubin into the fold. A source told Variety that Rubin, known for touring with Nine Inch Nails since 2009, will replace Freese. The band has shows lined up in Jakarta, Singapore, and Mexico City this October. It’s still unclear if Rubin’s role will be a permanent one or just for these tours.

In a surprising twist, Freese will now be the touring drummer for Nine Inch Nails on their upcoming “Peel It Back” tour. Freese, who played with them from 2005 to 2008, takes Rubin’s spot. Interestingly, Rubin had initially planned to join this tour but had to bow out after accepting the Foo Fighters gig.

Rubin has a rich musical background, having drummed for bands like Angels & Airwaves and Paramore. He became the youngest member ever inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020.

Freese has had a long and varied career, performing with renowned acts like Devo and Guns N’ Roses. After being let go from Foo Fighters, he expressed his surprise and disappointment, stating, “In my 40 years of drumming professionally, I’ve never been let go from a band.” Still, he remains optimistic and has humorously suggested he might share a list of “Top 10 possible reasons Josh got booted from the Foo Fighters.”
