February 3 was a big day for the Regional Food Bank of Hudson Valley (FBHV). Their new distribution center opened at 574 Route 416 in Montgomery. This $25 million facility is designed to help many people in need of food across the Hudson Valley.
The center has been in the works for years, supported by local and state partners. After a lot of planning and hard work, the building was completed on December 14, 2024. It offers double the space of the previous facility in Cornwall-on-Hudson. With four times as many storage racks and cold storage options, the new center promises to improve the quality of food distribution. Its location near major highways I-84 and I-87 makes it easier to deliver supplies efficiently.
“We built this facility with the help of many communities to serve residents better,” said Felicia Kalan, executive vice president of FBHV.
The need for food assistance was clear on the opening day. Volunteers sorted food, and staff used forklifts to move supplies. This center heavily relies on donations from residents, local stores like Walmart and Target, and grants.
When food arrives, staff and volunteers check the quality and sort it into boxes. Many boxes are labeled for specific agencies to ensure they get what they need. Volunteers from the old location were excited about the new space, saying it’s much safer and easier to sort food.
“This new facility is wonderful. We have more space to sort and store food,” said Jacqueline Dolan, a volunteer engagement specialist.
Long-time volunteer John Chedister shared his thoughts: “The old place felt cramped and dirty. Here, everything is organized, and we even have our own break room.”
New volunteer Estee Toth added, “I’m really happy to be part of this. It feels great to help others in such a positive environment.”
After sorting, the food is distributed to agencies in several counties, including Dutchess, Orange, and Ulster. Many agency members come to pick up supplies, and staff help with loading heavier boxes. The food bank also delivers directly to these agencies, making it easier for them to support their communities.
“This new facility will significantly benefit our communities, providing vital food support,” said Diane Serratore, executive director of People to People in Rockland County.
Diana Velasquez from RECAP in Middletown remarked, “Getting in and out of here is easy, which will help everyone we serve.”
Beyond just handing out food, FBHV aims to tackle food insecurity with education. The facility includes a kitchen and training room for culinary programs and community events. They want to teach cooking skills and promote healthy eating.
“It’s about nutrition and education, not just giving out food,” said Barry Lewis, senior public affairs officer. “We’re working with over 400 agencies, including schools and hospitals, to make a lasting impact.”
