The Food Bank of Central New York is set to provide 7,000 containers of baby formula to families in need, thanks to a recent settlement from the Attorney General’s office. This settlement, worth $675,000, came after two companies, Marine Park and Formula Depot, were found to have significantly inflated their prices during the baby formula shortage in 2022.
At a press conference in Syracuse, Attorney General Letitia James shared details about the case. She mentioned that her office received numerous complaints regarding overpriced baby formula. “We opened a portal and a hotline for people to report these issues,” she explained. The investigation led to a settlement instead of a lengthy court battle.
Out of the settlement, $100,000 will be allocated to the Food Bank of Central New York. CEO Karen Belcher emphasized the urgent need for such assistance. With changes to programs like SNAP and WIC, many families are struggling. “We noticed how precarious people’s budgets are,” she noted. The goal is to distribute this formula quickly, potentially within three weeks, to families across an 11-county area.
Attorney General James also stressed the importance of protecting vulnerable families. “This case serves as a warning to anyone trying to profit from shortages. Families in crisis deserve better support,” she stated, emphasizing that immediate assistance is crucial during tough times.
