Food Prices Surge for Fourth Month in a Row: What You Need to Know

Food prices have been on the rise, marking the fourth month of increasing costs. Fresh meat, especially steak, is getting pricier as wholesale beef prices climb, leading to higher prices at supermarkets.

According to the British Retail Consortium (BRC), overall shop prices stayed steady in May, remaining about 0.1% cheaper compared to last year. Though non-food items saw a slight dip in prices, categories like fashion and home goods are starting to see less discounting as retailers pull back on heavy promotions. Interestingly, electrical goods are seeing quicker price drops as stores aim to boost sales before potential US tariffs might hit.

Food inflation is now at 2.8%, up from 2.6% in April. Fresh food prices specifically jumped from 1.8% to 2.4% higher than last May. On the other hand, ambient food inflation decreased slightly, falling to 3.3%.

BRC chief executive Helen Dickinson shared insights on the situation. She noted that while shop prices haven’t changed much, the consistent rise in food prices is concerning. Retailers are currently absorbing £5 billion in extra costs from increased national insurance contributions and the national living wage. There’s also an upcoming £2 billion expense from a new packaging tax, adding to the financial pressure on businesses.

Retailers are in a challenging spot. Mike Watkins from NielsenIQ commented that while savings can be found at the checkout due to ongoing promotions, rising prices add stress to consumer spending. Weak consumer confidence could make it harder for retailers to attract shoppers.
