David Ford from North Carolina has just won the 2025 Jack Nicklaus Award, celebrated as the National Player of the Year. This prestigious honor pays tribute to the legendary golfer, Jack Nicklaus, known for his 18 major championships.
This marks Ford’s second Player of the Year award this season. Earlier, he received the Fred Haskins Award and was a finalist for the Ben Hogan Award. Nicklaus personally presented the award to Ford right before the final round of the Memorial tournament, a significant PGA Tour event.
Ford is breaking records as the first player from UNC to win the Nicklaus Award, which has been awarded since 1988. Past winners include golf icons like Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, and Justin Thomas. Ludvig Aberg and Jackson Koivun were the award recipients in the previous two years.
This season, Ford not only received first-team All-America honors but also earned his PGA Card for the 2025 and 2026 seasons by topping the PGA TOUR University standings. He finished the year ranked No. 1 in the NCAA, leading the nation in both wins and scoring average.
Originally from Peachtree Corners, Ga., Ford set impressive records at UNC: five wins in a single season, a scoring average of 68.78, and a score to par of -89. He made history as the first Tar Heel to win three tournaments in a row. His outstanding performance earned him the ACC Player of the Month title three times in October, March, and April.
