The Ford Mustang GTD Competition has claimed the title of the fastest street-legal American car at the Nürburgring with a stunning lap time of 6 minutes and 40.835 seconds. This beats its previous record by an impressive 11 seconds and leaves the Corvette ZR1X trailing by over eight seconds.
Back in 2024, the Mustang GTD first made headlines by becoming the first American production car to achieve a sub-seven-minute lap. It clocked a remarkable time of 6 minutes and 57.685 seconds, surpassing the Dodge Viper ACR by 4.3 seconds. Ford also made significant changes to the car’s design, adding magnesium wheels, carbon bucket seats, and lighter dampers, shedding weight to enhance speed. The standard Mustang GTD weighs around 4,404 pounds (1,998 kilograms).
To boost aerodynamics, the Mustang GTD Competition features a redesigned body with an upgraded rear wing and additional front dive planes. These enhancements improve downforce and grip, allowing for sharper cornering.
