Kathmandu, August 22: Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba, Nepal’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, has underscored the pressing need for climate protection and environmental conservation. She made these remarks while launching a tree planting initiative in Kansi Bhanjyang, a part of Banepa municipality.
During her statement, Dr. Deuba voiced her concern about the severe impacts of climate change on Nepal. “We’re in crisis due to climate change effects. We’ve shared this with the global community, and they understand that Nepal is not to blame for this situation,” she noted. She emphasized the importance of taking meaningful steps toward achieving climate justice.
Dr. Deuba also referred to Nepal’s role in the recent Sagarmatha Sambaad, where the country showcased its vulnerability to climate change on an international stage. Moreover, she mentioned her efforts at the International Court of Justice to raise awareness about climate issues impacting Nepal.
In her commitment to climate justice, she pointed to initiatives like ‘Carbon Trade’ and a ‘Loss and Damage Fund’ as crucial support mechanisms for Nepal. This reflects a growing trend where many nations are pushing for accountability and action from those most responsible for climate change. According to a recent survey by the Global Climate Advocacy Project, 74% of respondents believe that countries should be held financially accountable for climate impacts on vulnerable nations.
This tree planting event, organized by the Ullens Education Foundation in partnership with Banepa municipality, is a part of broader efforts to combat climate change effects through local actions and global advocacy.
As public awareness grows, social media trends reflect increased dialogue about climate justice, especially among younger generations. Many young people are using platforms like Twitter and Instagram to share stories, facts, and advocacy efforts around climate change, creating a vibrant community focused on environmental action.
