Eileen Wang, the former mayor of Arcadia, has pled guilty to acting as an illegal foreign agent for China. This plea comes after she recently stepped down from her position following federal charges.
Wang, 58, worked with her fiancé to run a website catering to Chinese Americans, spreading Chinese government propaganda. Investigators claim she prioritized the interests of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) over her constituents.
She faces up to ten years in prison, with her sentencing set for October 6.
Bill Essayli, an Assistant U.S. Attorney, highlighted the importance of exposing individuals who undermine democracy through foreign influence. “This plea agreement is a success in our fight against China’s attempts to infiltrate U.S. institutions,” he stated.
Wang’s website, “U.S. News Center,” appeared as a regular news outlet but featured PRC-approved articles. Court documents reveal she received direct instructions from PRC officials to post content, often failing to disclose this to her audience. Assistant U.S. Attorney Amanda B. Elbogen compared the site to established news platforms like CNN, mixing standard updates with propaganda.
After being elected to the Arcadia City Council in November 2022, Wang’s actions raised concerns within the community, especially given the city’s large Chinese-American population. Elbogen noted that having someone in power acting on behalf of a foreign government can fracture public trust.
Justine Bruno from the city of Arcadia reassured residents that “individual council members don’t have the authority to act alone.” The city’s governance structure is designed to minimize potential risks from one member’s actions.
Councilwoman Sharon Kwan expressed her apprehensions about Wang’s activities. She emphasized the importance of protecting democracy and preventing foreign influence. Earlier this year, Wang’s former fiancé, Yaoning “Mike” Sun, was also sentenced for similar charges.
