A former CIA official, David Rush, was arrested last week amid allegations of serious misconduct. The FBI discovered about $40 million in gold bars at his home while investigating claims he misrepresented his educational and military background.
Currently, Rush is in jail as both his defense team and federal prosecutors gather evidence. They’ve asked for extra time, postponing his detention hearing until June 5 in the U.S. District Court for Virginia.
According to a joint statement from the FBI and CIA, Rush’s arrest followed a CIA referral after an internal probe uncovered “potential violations of law.” The investigation is still ongoing.
Rush is charged with stealing public money. A unique complaint from the FBI claims he fraudulently inflated his salary, lied about his military leave, and made numerous false statements about his background. Notably, it doesn’t detail the specific actions that led to these charges.
Between November 2025 and March this year, Rush allegedly requested government funds for large amounts of foreign currency and tens of millions in gold bars, claimed to be for work. However, his employer, the CIA, couldn’t account for the gold’s intended use.
During the FBI’s search of his residence on May 18, they found approximately 303 gold bars valued over $40 million, alongside $2 million in cash and 35 luxury watches.
The FBI also claims Rush misled the U.S. Navy during his enlistment in 1997 by submitting false records, suggesting he graduated from Clemson University. Because of this claimed degree, he was commissioned in the Navy Reserves in 2004 and served until 2015. Between subsequent government job applications, he falsely cited degrees from reputable institutions like Clemson and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and he even claimed to be a graduate of the Air Force Test Pilot School while applying for a senior executive position.
The FBI’s investigation demonstrates that Rush’s claims about his education and military service were fabricated. Interestingly, he allegedly continued to receive military leave compensation despite being honorably discharged.
As the situation unfolds, it highlights the need for transparency and integrity in government positions. Fraudulent claims can have serious implications, not just for those involved directly, but for national security and public trust in intelligence agencies.
