Three former Eastern Michigan basketball players are at the center of a sports betting investigation. The NCAA announced that Jalin Billingsley, Da’Sean Nelson, and Jalen Terry chose not to participate in the inquiry related to potential betting irregularities during the 2024-25 season.
The investigation began after suspicious betting patterns were detected in Eastern Michigan’s game against Central Michigan on January 14. The NCAA had imaged the players’ phones on January 29 as part of their probe. However, all three have refused interviews and requested that the NCAA destroy the data collected.
This refusal could have serious consequences. Although the players have already exhausted their eligibility, not cooperating with investigations can lead to further penalties, including bans from athletically related activities. In a statement, the NCAA highlighted the importance of cooperation, especially in cases that could impact the integrity of the sport.
The investigation isn’t isolated. Currently, the NCAA is examining a total of 13 athletes across six schools for similar gambling concerns.
Interestingly, the suspicious betting wasn’t limited to just one game. Sportsbooks noted unusual betting activity against Eastern Michigan in three of their games last season: against Wright State on December 21, at Toledo on January 7, and against Central Michigan. In all these cases, the Eagles trailed at halftime, raising more eyebrows regarding the betting patterns.
Billingsley, Nelson, and Terry were key players for Eastern Michigan, with Terry leading the team in scoring last season with an average of 16.6 points per game, followed closely by Nelson at 16.1 points per game. After their time at Eastern Michigan, Nelson signed with Fribourg Olympic, a club in Switzerland.
The scandal surrounding sports betting in college athletics is on the rise. A recent report from the NCAA indicated that nearly 20% of college athletes reported being approached about betting on games. This trend has raised alarms about the integrity of collegiate sports, prompting the NCAA to ramp up its investigations.
