Former Gerry Connolly Chief of Staff Secures Democratic Nomination for Congressional Seat

James Walkinshaw has secured the Democratic nomination to fill the late Rep. Gerry Connolly’s seat in a strong Democratic district in Northern Virginia. Walkinshaw, who served as Connolly’s chief of staff for a decade, garnered 59.54% of the votes in a competitive primary.

In the race, he faced nine other candidates, including state Senator Stella Pekarsky and Delegate Irene Shin. Pekarsky came in third with 13.40%, while Shin took second place with 14.27%. This primary was notable, as Walkinshaw had Connolly’s endorsement before the representative passed away.

Notably, these ads targeted Pekarsky for her stance on a controversial casino referendum in Fairfax County.

Looking ahead, Walkinshaw is positioned as a strong candidate for the special election in September. Historical trends suggest he’s likely to win, as President Biden carried the district by a significant margin in recent elections. He’ll face Republican Stewart Whitson, a veteran and former FBI official, in what promises to be an engaging matchup.
