Former MLB pitcher Daniel Serafini was sentenced to life in prison on Friday for the tragic shooting of his wife’s parents during a burglary at their Lake Tahoe home in 2021.
Serafini, 51, was found guilty in July 2025 of murdering his father-in-law, Gary Spohr, and attempting to murder his mother-in-law, Wendy Wood. Spohr was killed, while Wood survived until her death a year later.
Placer County District Attorney Morgan Gire shared that the impact of this crime reached far beyond the immediate victims, affecting family and the local community deeply. “Deliberate violence leaves lasting harm,” he noted.
During his sentencing, Serafini maintained his innocence, claiming he was out with his wife the night of the shooting. He described himself as a “broken, imperfect man.” This defense did not sway the judge.
Serafini, who was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in 1992, had a career that included playing for several teams, such as the Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres. However, prosecutors highlighted a darker side, revealing that Serafini had expressed a desire to harm his in-laws. They presented evidence of angry messages between him and his wife’s family, illustrating a strained relationship.
His attorney, David Dratman, argued there was no physical evidence tying Serafini to the scene. While he acknowledged the difficult family dynamics, he claimed there was no motive for murder. Nonetheless, after his conviction, Serafini’s motions for a new trial were denied.
