Former Trump Aide Who Debunked 2020 Election Myths Now Faces Federal Investigation: What It Means for Democracy

A former cybersecurity leader, Chris Krebs, is currently under federal investigation, as confirmed by a Department of Homeland Security official. This inquiry has resulted in Krebs being removed from the Global Entry program, which expedites airport clearance for pre-approved U.S. travelers.

The DHS spokesperson stated, “Chris Krebs is under active investigation by law enforcement.” However, the details of the investigation remain undisclosed, including which agencies are involved.

Krebs previously served as the head of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency during President Trump’s first term. He was fired after declaring that the 2020 election was “the most secure in American history,” asserting there was no evidence of fraud or compromised voting systems.

Recently, President Trump issued a memo directing an investigation into Krebs’ actions while in office. This memo also revoked Krebs’ security clearance and marked an unusual move for a sitting president to call for government probes against former officials. It suggested that Krebs attempted to stifle conservative views on social media regarding the election and COVID-19 through supposed disinformation efforts.

Despite Trump’s repeated claims that the 2020 election was “stolen,” numerous lawsuits alleging widespread fraud have been dismissed in courts across the country, indicating a lack of substantial evidence. In fact, a Pew Research Center study found that about 78% of Americans trust their election systems, reflecting a significant belief in the integrity of the electoral process.

Krebs recently stepped down from his position at SentinelOne to prepare for his legal defense, as maintaining a security clearance is vital for roles in federal cybersecurity contracts. Over 40 cybersecurity experts have signed a letter condemning what they describe as “political persecution” of Krebs, claiming such actions threaten the integrity of cybersecurity professionals.
