The complaint comes from Rebecca Bryant Novak, a former doctoral student at the Eastman School of Music. She claims she was unlawfully expelled in retaliation for reporting harassment and misconduct.
Organizers of the press event believe a graduate workers’ union could have made a significant difference. Ashwini Sukthankar, one of the event organizers, stated, “If a union had existed when Rebecca faced her issues, she wouldn’t have to deal with the unfair procedures at the university.” The organizers argue that a union could negotiate better protections against discrimination and harassment.
In response, the Eastman School of Music emphasized that it prohibits illegal harassment and retaliation and has followed all relevant laws in addressing Bryant Novak’s concerns.
Meanwhile, several graduate students who attended the press conference are currently on strike. They assert that the university has not provided a fair process for forming a union.
The university has stated that it is not obstructing the students’ efforts to secure recognition through a National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) election.
