Framework Delays Laptop 12 Orders in the US: What You Need to Know About Tariff Impacts

Framework has decided not to open preorders for the new Laptop 12 in the U.S. today. The company is taking time to assess how Trump’s tariffs might affect their pricing strategy. However, buyers in Canada and Europe can still get their hands on the laptop starting today.

This Laptop 12 is notable for being Framework’s smallest and first convertible touchscreen model. It features a powerful 13th Gen Intel Core i3 or i5 chip, a sharp 1920×1200 touchscreen compatible with a stylus, and impressive specifications that include up to 48GB of RAM and 2TB of storage. Like its predecessors, this laptop is designed to be modular and easily repairable. It even comes in stylish pastel colors like pink and mint, which has caught the attention of many buyers.

Though the exact pricing hasn’t been disclosed, the Laptop 12 is expected to be positioned as an entry-level option, likely priced lower than the Laptop 13. The Laptop 13 starts at $899 for a DIY version and $1,099 for a prebuilt model. Recently, Framework paused sales on some cheaper versions of the Laptop 13 in the U.S. to avoid losses due to the new tariffs.

Manufactured in Taiwan, Framework laptops are currently facing a 32% tariff. The company shared on Bluesky that their initial response is to make the most reversible changes, such as delaying product launches. This cautious approach means they intend to hold off on raising prices until they have clearer information on alternatives.

Interestingly, this situation underscores a larger trend in the tech industry. As tariffs fluctuate and impact manufacturing costs, companies must be agile and adapt quickly to stay viable. According to a recent survey by the Tech Industry Association, around 60% of tech firms are currently reviewing their supply chains due to tariff uncertainties.

For customers outside the U.S., preorders for the Laptop 12 will open today at 1 PM ET, and the pricing details will be revealed at that time. As the tech landscape continues to change, Framework’s approach to modular designs and sustainability could resonate more with consumers looking for repairable technology.
