France Calls Out US Ambassador: The Controversial Letter on Antisemitism You Need to Know About

France has called in the American ambassador to discuss a recent letter from Charles Kushner. This letter criticized France for allegedly not doing enough to fight antisemitism. France’s foreign ministry responded strongly, stating that Kushner’s claims are “unacceptable.”

The White House and U.S. State Department have not yet commented on the situation. Inviting the ambassador for a meeting is a clear sign of France’s dissatisfaction.

Kushner is a real estate developer and the father of Jared Kushner, who is married to Donald Trump’s daughter. The French foreign ministry firmly rejected his claims. They emphasized that French authorities are working hard to address antisemitism, especially after the October 7 attacks by Hamas on Israel, which prompted a rise in antisemitic incidents.

While the specific contents of Kushner’s letter aren’t public, France argues that his actions interfere with their internal matters and undermine the trust between the countries.

This diplomatic tension comes shortly after French President Emmanuel Macron rejected Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s accusations that France’s support for recognizing a Palestinian state contributes to antisemitism.

France boasts the largest Jewish community in Western Europe, with around 500,000 Jews, making up about 1% of the nation’s population. Antisemitism remains a significant issue; a 2022 survey found that nearly 40% of French Jews reported feeling unsafe in their neighborhoods due to escalating antisemitic acts.

The relationship between France and the U.S. has faced challenges this year. Tensions have surfaced over trade policies and differing stances on international peacekeeping in Lebanon. France has been critical of U.S. efforts to reduce missions like the U.N. peacekeeping force known as UNIFIL, which aims to maintain peace in Lebanon.

Despite these divisions, both nations are united on supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, especially after Trump showed renewed support for security guarantees during a recent meeting with European leaders.

Kushner’s actions are under scrutiny, reflecting a broader struggle over identity, values, and international relations. It’s a reminder that the words and actions of diplomats can significantly impact longstanding alliances.
