PARIS — France’s foreign minister has asked that U.S. Ambassador Charles Kushner be denied direct access to French government members following his absence from a crucial meeting. This meeting aimed to address comments by the Trump administration regarding the murder of a far-right activist.
Kushner, the father of Jared Kushner, who is a senior adviser to former President Donald Trump, missed the meeting at the Quai d’Orsay, France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Minister Jean-Noel Barrot stated that Kushner’s absence was a clear misunderstanding of what it means to represent one’s country as an ambassador.
However, the foreign ministry indicated a willingness to reconcile. They mentioned that Kushner could still fulfill his duties and meet with them to resolve any misunderstandings.
The situation escalated after the U.S. State Department’s Counterterrorism Bureau shared a post on social media highlighting the death of Quentin Deranque, a far-right activist who suffered fatal brain injuries from a violent attack in Lyon. The post, which was supported by the French Minister of the Interior, flagged concerns about rising left-wing extremism.
The political climate in France is particularly tense, especially with the presidential elections approaching. Barrot condemned using Deranque’s death for political gain, insisting that France has no lessons to receive about violence from abroad.
In the State Department’s social media statement, they noted a troubling trend of violent radical leftism and pledged ongoing monitoring of public safety issues related to such extremism.
This isn’t the first time Kushner’s actions have caused diplomatic friction; in August, he faced criticism for suggesting that France should do more to combat antisemitism. Similar issues arose when he didn’t attend a prior meeting.
