FRANKLIN COUNTY, Fla. – For many kids in Franklin County, school meals aren’t just a treat; they’re vital. The BreakSpot Summer Food Program is here to help, ensuring no child goes hungry when school is out.
This program serves around 300 students in Carrabelle, Eastpoint, and Apalachicola during the summer months. Franklin County Schools participate in the Community Eligibility Provision, a federal initiative that provides free meals to students in low-income areas.
According to Shellie Ingram, the director of Food and Nutrition Services, all students receive free meals during the school year. Unfortunately, many don’t have access to nutritious options when school closes.
“BreakSpot matters because our children rely on these meals,” Ingram shared. “We want to keep that support going all summer.”
Every day, children and teens under 18 can enjoy breakfast and a hot lunch filled with healthy fruits and vegetables, regardless of whether they attend Franklin County Schools.
The meal sites in Carrabelle and Eastpoint will be open through the end of July. Here are the locations:
Congregate sites (meals must be eaten on-site):
- Carrabelle Nest, 1581 U.S. Highway 98 W., Carrabelle, FL
- UMC Eastpoint Nest, 317 Patterson Drive, Eastpoint, FL
Non-congregate sites (meals available for pickup; guardian signature required):
- Carrabelle Methodist Church, 302 Tallahassee St., Carrabelle, FL
- Eastpoint Taylor’s Hardware parking lot, 282 U.S. Highway 98, Eastpoint, FL
Summer hunger is a reality for many families. A recent survey found that over 20% of households with children reported food insecurity during the summer months, highlighting programs like BreakSpot’s importance.
Public reactions on social media show widespread support for these initiatives. Parents express gratitude for the program, emphasizing how it eases their financial burden and ensures their children receive healthy meals.
Eating well is crucial for kids’ growth and learning. By providing access to nutritious food, programs like BreakSpot help build a healthier future for these children.
