LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Three transit agencies are stepping up to help residents in the tri-county area. Starting Saturday, CATA, EATRAN, and Clinton Transit are offering free rides to food pantries. This comes as many people face the loss of SNAP benefits during the federal government shutdown.
These agencies are making it easier for everyone to access food assistance. Riders can use any service to reach a food pantry. Just let the driver know you’re heading to a pantry, and you’ll get a free ride, no ID needed.
To make the most of this offer, here’s how to access free rides:
- CATA Rydz customers can use the promo code 2025SNAPRydz in the app for free rides.
- For CATA’s Spec-Tran and Rural Service, trips must be scheduled by 5 p.m. the day before you need a ride. It’s a good idea to book all Redi-Ride trips at least one day in advance. Call 517-394-2282 for demand-response rides or book online through the MyRideCATA app.
- EATRAN riders should reserve their free trips also one day ahead by calling 517-543-4087, by 5 p.m.
- If you’re using Clinton Transit, call 989-224-8127 or use their mobile app to schedule a ride. Available hours are Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
This initiative highlights the importance of community support during tough times. According to a recent survey from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, food insecurity has sharply increased, especially in areas affected by economic challenges. Programs like this one not only provide essential services but also strengthen community bonds.
As the situation unfolds, residents are voicing their thoughts on social media. Many express gratitude, emphasizing how vital these services are in helping families facing uncertainty.
