Les Sinclair, the Food Bank’s Communications and Public Relations Manager, emphasizes the importance of nutrition for children’s growth and learning. “We want to ensure they don’t worry about their next meal,” he shared.

About 10% of Virginians rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or similar aid, but these benefits often only cover school meals during the academic year. Recently, Senator Tim Kaine highlighted the limitations of these benefits, explaining that some families receive as little as $4.75 per day for food. “That’s not much,” he noted, especially with rising food prices.

The Food Bank, supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, distributes food through 25 locations in the area. Sinclair points out that these efforts can make a big difference for families who are struggling. “Programs like this help kids thrive when school is out,” he stated.

However, upcoming federal budget cuts could worsen the situation. Senator Kaine expressed concern over proposed cuts to SNAP that could impact over 200,000 Virginians. “We need to prioritize access to nutrition for low-income families,” he urged.

The Food Bank continues to see a growing demand for its services. This summer alone, they expect to provide over 34,000 meals to more than 550 children. “For many families, having access to food helps ease their daily burdens,” Sinclair explained. He recognizes that food assistance is just one part of what families need in a high-cost living environment.
