In June, the Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma is launching its Summer Feeding Program to offer free meals and snacks to children across central and western Oklahoma. This initiative aims to combat hunger during the summer months when many kids lose access to school meals.
CEO Stacy Dykstra emphasizes the importance of food security during the summer. “Summer should be a time for growth and opportunity, not hunger,” she states. The program runs from June 1 to August 7, providing meals at over 100 locations for children aged 18 and under.
The meals are available in two formats: congregate meals, which must be eaten on-site, and grab-and-go meals, allowing families to take food home. This flexibility caters to different needs in the community.
Here are a few locations in Oklahoma County where meals will be distributed:
- **Kingfisher County Extension Office (Grab and Go)**
300 S. 13th St, Kingfisher, OK 73750
Time: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Dates: June 1, June 15, June 29, July 13, July 27 - **Crutcho Public Schools (Mobile Distribution, Grab and Go)**
2401 N. Air Depot Blvd, Oklahoma City, OK 73141
Time: 10 to 11:45 a.m.
Dates: June 17, July 15 - **Millwood Elementary School (Mobile Distribution, Grab and Go)**
6724 N. Martin Luther King Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73111

Programs like this are crucial, especially in light of recent statistics indicating that food insecurity affects 1 in 7 children in the U.S. These initiatives strive to ensure that no child is left hungry during the summer months.

In a time when community efforts are essential, the Summer Feeding Program reflects a broader commitment to child nutrition in Oklahoma. Such programs not only meet immediate needs but also support children’s health and well-being, preparing them for the school year ahead.
